Lap Lane
created by sandra groeneveld
Object: Lap Pool
Materials: Vitreous Glass
Dimensions: Lap Lane: 37 feet long, 7.5 inches wide
Method: Indirect using clear contact tape
This was originally only meant to be a lap lane strip. The work on the lap lane proceeded so quickly, there was time left over to add a decorative embellishment .... some dancing dolphins.
See the detail shots for a quick overview. I am in the process of making a more comprehensive timeline explanation of the whole process, so check back later.
Close-ups & Process
01 The initial strip to test the contact tape, the layout and the process of applying the contact sheet to mortar. I ended up shrinking the design a bit for tighter tile spacing as well as rounding the end of the curls.
02 Last dry-fit test before installation.
03 The pool tile installer did all the prep work, and I helped with the final installation. It was really nice having an extra pair of hands helping on this kind of project for a change.
04 Installation of the dolphins.
05 All the tiles down, ready for grout.
06 After grouting, the team to apply the interior finish of the pool came in. They did a beautiful job matching up to the tiles.
07 Acid wash to clean off the interior finish.
08 Last chance to take close ups of the dolphins without being under water!
09 Both the lap lane and the dolphins only contain 2 colors; black and a beautiful iridescent aqua blue. Just gorgeous in the sunlight.
10 The pool being filled with water.
